On our very first call,
a new client from South America told me honestly:

A few weeks later,
that exact situation appeared—very clearly and very loudly.

One of his key buyers wanted very cheap filters
for older trucks:

  • 📋 but much weaker specs

He came straight to the point:

“Can you reduce the media and change some parts
so I can hit this target price?
They said they don’t care about long life,
just very cheap.”

Technically, the answer was: yes, we could.

But we’ve seen what happens when filters are pushed too far:

  • orders are big and repeat

But in the filter business, “very cheap” is rarely just a commercial choice.
It is also a technical and reputational risk.

So before we touched any design or cost,
we needed to clarify options and risks.

From a pure technical perspective, the request was possible:

  • hit a very low target price

But our experience told us:

To handle this situation professionally, we prepared three clear options:

2️⃣ A standard version
3️⃣ The “very cheap” version he requested, with full warning

4.1 Option 1 – “Safe Economy” Filter Version

This option was designed to:

  • reduce cost in a controlled way
  • keep minimum protection
  • avoid the most dangerous shortcuts

Characteristics:

  • some economical adjustments in components
  • optimized media usage, but still within safe limits
  • maintains a baseline of filtration and structural integrity

This was our way of saying:

“Here is a more affordable product,
but it still respects your brand and your customers’ engines.”

4.2 Option 2 – Standard Filter Version

This was:

  • the product we would normally recommend
  • a balance between cost and performance
  • suitable for:
    • fleets that care about uptime
    • workshops that want fewer complaints
    • customers who compare value, not just price

We wanted to keep this as the reference—
the “default” responsible choice.

4.3 Option 3 – The “Very Cheap” Version (With Clear Warnings)

We also prepared a version on paper that matched his original request:

  • heavily reduced cost
  • significantly weaker specs
  • shorter expected life

But we did two very deliberate things:

  1. We prepared clear written warnings explaining:
    • where we had reduced materials
    • how this affected performance and risk
  2. We sent photos comparing media and parts
    • showing the visual difference between:
      • safe economy

      • very cheap

Then I told him directly:

“Option 3 is technically possible,
but we do not recommend putting your brand on it.
Short‑term margin may look good,
but one serious failure could damage your name permanently.”

We didn’t hide that we could do it.
We just insisted on being brutally honest about the implications.

He hesitated.

    Here is a safer, economical alternative.”

5.2 The Decision: Saying “No” to the Riskiest Option

After thinking it through, he decided:

  • to say no to Option 3
  • to offer Option 1 (safe economy) instead

This decision was not easy for him.

He told me later:

“Bruce, saying ‘no’ was scary.
But having your data and options
made it much easier.”

  1. The Result: Customer Kept, Brand Protected

What happened after he said “no” to the very cheap version?

Result:

  • ✅ He kept the customer
    • The buyer accepted the safe economy option.
  • ✅ Complaints did not increase
    • The filters were cheaper than standard but still safe.
  • ✅ His brand did not become
    “the cheap one that kills engines”

In other words:

  • He preserved the relationship.
  • He protected his reputation.
  • He kept his future options open with that customer.

If engines had started to fail due to ultra‑cheap filters:

In B2B, a real partner doesn’t just say “yes”
to every request.

Sometimes the most valuable support a supplier can offer is:

Saying “yes” is easy when:

  • the only goal is to ship more volume today.

Saying “no” is difficult when:

  • you fear losing a big account
  • competitors may accept the “very cheap” game
  • you feel pressure from both sides

But over the long term:

  • brands that protect their reputation survive
  • brands that chase every cheap request often get stuck with:
    • more complaints
    • damaged image
    • lower trust
