In B2B manufacturing, especially in the automotive aftermarket, most people focus on:
- product quality
- price
- lead time
Very few people talk about something that creates daily pain for distributors and warehouses:
Packaging and label usability.
A filter that fits perfectly but arrives with poor or confusing labeling can still:
- slow down receiving
- cause picking errors
- create returns and mis‑shipments
- cause frustration in the warehouse
One day, a simple conversation with a distributor about his new packaging made me realize how powerful small, useful help can be.
-
“Bruce, We’ll Update Our Packaging” – A Simple Request
1.1 What the Customer Said
A distributor told me:
“Bruce, we’ll update our packaging. New colors, new branding.”
He wasn’t asking for ideas.
He wasn’t asking for extra work from us.
He was simply:
- informing me so we could print new cartons
- letting us know he’d be sending the new design
The typical supplier answer would be:
- “Okay, please send us the design file.”
Some suppliers might say:
- “New packaging template will have a tooling or artwork fee.”
And that would be the end of the discussion.
1.2 What I Asked Instead
Instead, I asked him:
“Do you already have a label layout?
If not, I can design one for you — barcode, SKU, OE number, all aligned with your warehouse flow.”
He paused.
Then he said:
“Bruce, this is not typical. Most suppliers don’t offer this.”
That reaction told me a lot:
- He was used to suppliers just printing whatever file he sends
- He was not used to suppliers thinking about his warehouse flow, label logic, or retail visibility
For me, this was an opportunity to go beyond “box filling” and become a solution partner.

Why Label Logic Matters So Much for Distributors
2.1 The Hidden Cost of Poor Labels
Every distributor and warehouse team knows the pain of bad labels:
- Barcodes difficult to scan or poorly placed
- SKUs printed too small to read from a distance
- OE numbers missing or formatted inconsistently
- Important data split across multiple sides of the carton
- Pallet labels not aligned for easy checking
All of this creates extra cost:
- Slower receiving
- Picking mistakes
- Extra time walking around pallets to find labels
- Wrong parts shipped to customers
- Warehouse staff complaining about “hard to read packaging”
These costs are rarely visible on an invoice, but they show up every day in:
- lost time
- lost efficiency
- lost trust
2.2 Packaging as Part of the Brand Experience
For the end user and the workshop, packaging matters because:
- It signals brand quality
- It makes parts easy to identify
- It reduces confusion at the service counter
For the distributor, good packaging and labels:
- reduce errors
- make training new staff easier
- protect their brand image at every touchpoint
That’s why, when a customer says “new branding, new colors,” I don’t only think about aesthetics. I think about:
- how the box will live in the warehouse
- how quickly people can find the right part
- how the brand looks on the shelf
-
How We Helped: Designing His Label Template for Free
The customer sent:
- brand guidelines
- color references
- general direction for packaging
He did not send a complete label layout.
So I created one.
3.1 Clean Barcode Layout
We started with the barcode:
- Positioned for easy scanning on:
- single boxes
- master cartons
- Ensured enough quiet zone (white space around the barcode) for accurate scanning
- Used size and contrast suitable for different warehouse scanners
This helps the warehouse team:
- scan quickly without rotating every box
- reduce the chance of mis‑scan or failed read
3.2 Standardized OE Number Format
Next, we defined a standard OE number format:
- Consistent way to show:
- OEM numbers
- cross reference numbers (if needed)
- Clear hierarchy:
- Main OE number
- Supporting cross references
- Easy to read, not mixed randomly with marketing text
This supports:
- Faster identification when checking against OE catalogs
- Fewer mistakes when comparing parts on the shelf
3.3 SKU Size Logic for Receiving and Picking
We created SKU size logic that supports warehouse operations:
- Defined font sizes based on:
- Box type (small filter vs. large filter)
- Typical viewing distance in the warehouse
- Ensured that key identifiers (e.g., SKU code) are:
- visible from a couple of meters away
- consistently placed on each box
This helps:
- Warehouse staff quickly locate the right part
- Reduce time walking between shelves to check one box after another
3.4 Pallet Facing Label Positions
We thought beyond single boxes and looked at pallets:
- Defined where labels should be placed on master cartons so that:
- when stacked, at least one label is clearly visible on each pallet face
- scanning and checking pallet content doesn’t require moving cartons
- Considered:
- the height of typical pallets
- the position of labels relative to pallet edges
This reduces:
- Time needed for incoming inspection
- Errors during pallet picking and loading
3.5 Retail‑Friendly Alignment
For boxes going to retail environments or workshop counters, we also:
- Aligned key information (SKU, OE, logo, application) so that:
- the front‑facing side is clear and attractive
- secondary sides still provide enough identification
- Ensured the design:
- matched his new brand identity
- looked consistent across different filter types
This supports:
- Professional brand impression
- Easier upselling and recommendation at retail counters
3.6 Mockups for Approval
We prepared visual mockups for approval:
- 2D layouts with all elements marked
- Simple 3D visualizations showing how:
- the box looks from different angles
- boxes look when stacked
We sent him everything within a day.
Next morning, he replied:
“Perfect. You saved my team a lot of time.”

The Lesson: Loyalty Comes From Being Useful, Not Just Cheap
4.1 Trust Comes From Small, Unexpected Help
Many people think trust in international business comes from:
- big discounts
- big orders
- big gestures
In reality, trust often comes from:
- the small, unexpected help that solves real problems
Designing a label template is not a big project.
We didn’t charge for it.
But for the customer, it meant:
- He didn’t need to coordinate between:
- designer
- warehouse manager
- printing factory
- His team saved hours (or days) of work
- The final label design was not just “pretty”, but operationally smart
This is the kind of small action that silently builds long‑term loyalty.
4.2 You Don’t Build Loyalty by Being the Cheapest
You don’t become a long‑term partner by saying:
- “I am the cheapest supplier.”
You build loyalty by:
- being useful
- preventing problems
- protecting your customer’s brand and operations
When you:
- prevent warehouse confusion
- avoid packaging errors
- think about how your customer’s staff will work with your products daily
you:
- stop hidden costs
- protect their brand
- make their life easier
That’s when you stop being:
and start being:
- “a partner we can rely on.”
